The Giving Farm Festival Beautification

About the Farm: The Giving Farm is a farm-to-food bank program that works to promote student and community engagement in the California agricultural industry. The program expects to deliver over 200,000 pounds of produce annually for consumption by low-income communities. This enhances opportunities for students and volunteers to learn about urban agriculture and the connection to local food networks and also provides nutrition education about the importance of healthy eating and active lifestyles for at-risk youth.

About the Festival: The annual Westminster High School Fall Festival, one of our biggest events of the year! This annual festival is for all ages. FREE Admission! There will be delicious food, and drinks to purchase as well as games. Activities for children include a carnival area, bounce house, and photo booth. Along with our wonderful farm animals! There will be watermelon and other fall crops to purchase!

Position: We are looking for volunteers to help 'beautify' the farm and get it looking in tip-top shape in preparation for the Festival that will take place on Saturday, October 13th.

How this project affects our mission: Why is it important that the farm looks its best you ask? This is important for us because we will have media present at the event. Bringing awareness to the farm will ultimately increase the capacity/production of crops at the farm, which in turn, will help in accomplishing our mission to eradicate poverty in Orange County. Bringing attention to the farm will also allow us to promote another one of our missions to educate the community about sustainable urban agricultural land use.

Tasks:

  • Organizing various sections of the farm including areas with ceramic/plastic plant containers, wood/metal beams, and tools.
  • Removing weeds throughout the farm
  • Removing trash
  • Clearing debris
  • Covering a small area with hay where the pumpkins will eventually be laid out
  • Cleaning/washing equipment, tables, chairs, tools, etc.

Skills/Abilities Needed: Enthusiastic attitude, desire to help those less forunate, strong work ethic, ability to do manual labor that will require lifting objects, bending over, and wielding tools such as a rake or hoe.

Dates/Times: Volunteers may help from 10/5/18 till 10/11/18 from 7:30am - 7pm Mon-Sun. Any amount of hours you would like to serve would be greatly appreciated.

Benefits to Volunteers: Free entrance to the festival, personal audience with the farm animals, pride in accomplishing a project that will benefit your community, learning about urban agriculture, and ability to take home fresh produce from the farm.
